Kevin Shea’s Written Statement After Marcelo Lucero Killing

Yesterday, I learned that the jury selection in the trial for Kevin Shea—one of the seven teens accused of attacking and killing Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero—will begin on Monday, February 22.

Here’s the typed version of Shea’s written statement. I tried to retain the original grammar and spelling, although the paragraph breaks are my own (the original document doesn’t have paragraph breaks, except for the last sentence). Scroll down for images of the actual written confession.

I, Kevin Shea, [being duly sworn and deposed and] say(s):

I am 17 years old, born October 22, 1991. I currently live 301 Jamaica Avenue, Medford with my father, his girlfriend, her daughter, my brothers Mark and Tommy and Mark’s girlfriend Tommy Lynn. On Saturday, November 8 I was hanging out near the high school with Jeffrey Francis, Anthony Hartford and a kid named Bobby. As we were walking down Oregon Ave towards the railroad station Jordan Dasche picked us up in his SUV.

We stopped and got beer at the 7-11 near the L.I.E. service road. Anthony went in and got an 18 case of Budweiser cans. I’m not sure if he bought it or had someone get it for us.

PAGE 2/4
After getting the beer Jordan drove us to the Medford railroad station. We hung out at the station, Bobby left, three girls showed up and Jeff Conroy, Jose Pacheco and a kid named Chris showed up. A second car driven by Jason Moran also showed up with Frank Grillo, Matt Rivera and Jason Eberhardt were with Jason Moran.

Everyone was hanging out and Anthony, Nick, and myself talked about looking for people to fight. I was there for about two hours, when we decided to go to Southaven park. A group of us got in Jordan’s S.U.V. The group included Jordan, Jeff Conroy, Nick Hausch, Jose Pacheco, Anthony Hartford, Chris Overton, myself and three girls Feleica, Michelle, Nicole Tesoriero.

While at the park the conversation about going to fight with somebody continued. The girls didn’t know what was up but the seven boys in Jordan’s S.U.V. were talking shit like “Let’s fuck some Beaners up.” Beaners is a name we use when referring to Spanish people. More than one time we all said things like We gonna find some Beaners and fuck them up.

A group of seven of us which included Jordan, Jeff, Nicky, Jose, Anthony, Chris and I then got into Jordan’s S.U.V. and first drove near Nicky’s house looking for someone to fuck up. We didn’t find anyone, so one of us suggested going to Patchogue Village cause there are a lot of Beaners there.

As we drove on a street in Patchogue we saw a guy walking and we all got out of the S.U.V., except for Jordan and tried to chase the guy down.

PAGE 3/4
I couldn’t catch the guy. I fell shortly after getting out of the S.U.V.

The guy ran up to a house and was banging on the window trying to get help or get away from us. Jordan picked us up around the block. Jordan then parked and we started walking all seven in the group together.

Within a few minutes we spotted two guys walking through a parking lot near the railroad station. We approached them as the walked on the street near the parking lot. Anthony Hartford and I popped off at them to see if they would react. I said something like “Come through nigga” which a term we use to call someone out to fight. All of us were talking shit.

Anthony Hartford, Jose Pacheco and I were closest to them. One of the guys had taken his jacket off and I walked towards him. He reached towards his pocket. I then put my right hand into the waist band of my pants as if I were pulling out a gun and said “Cut the shit motherfucker.”

I continued to walk towards him and once I was close enough to him, I snuffed him in the face. My right handed punch landed hard near his mouth and he began to bleed right away. I said, “You’re already bleeding that’s all I had to do.”

I started to walk back towards the parking lot and realized the Spanish guys who were older then us had taken off their belts. The guy that I snuffed was swinging his belt over his head. I yelled to my friends to surround the guy and try to control him. The guy I [words cut off on copy] bleeding continued to swing his belt and

went towards Nicky.

Jeff Conroy started to run towards the guy. When Jeff was up close to the guy we were in the parking lot. I did not know if Jeff hit him or not, but the fight stopped shortly after that. The guy was walking back into the street and he had a lot more blood on him, far more than when I punched him in the mouth.

Jeff said to me “We really gotta go.” I called out to everyone else and we began to walk away. Jeff, Chris and I were walking ahead of the others and when we turned the corner Jeff said “We’re fucked, hurry up, I stabbed that guy.”

At first I didn’t believe him, but when he showed me his knife with blood on it I knew it was no joke. Chris told him to get rid of the knife, Jeff didn’t, he put the knife in a puddle trying to wash the blood off it, folded the blade and put the knife in his pants.

As we walked towards the S.U.V. I thought we might get away, but Chris pointed out a video camera and within seconds a police car rolled up on us. Other officers showed up and arrested us.

I have been involved in beatings like this before but no one ever used a knife. We would just beat people up. Last Monday Jeffrey Francis, Jeff Conroy, Anthony Hartford, Jose Pacheco, Danny Cleary, Brandon Cleary were present on Jamaica Ave when Anthony, Jose and I knocked out a Spanish guy.

I have read this statement which Detective McLeer printed, made corrections to the statement and swear it is true.
